Geology

In Padjelanta/Badjelánnda you can see underfoot how the latest inland ice sheet has polished the landscape.

Ice grooves remain and the thin soil cover reveals the contours of the bedrock. The land is rich in lime and partially weathered. Here and there you will find real limestone, with lush meadows of mountain avens.

Traces of the inland ice

In Virihávrre lake the milky glacial water from Sulidälbmá mountain blends with the clear fresh water of the lake. Along the trail towards Stáddájåhkå and elsewhere, you pass several bogs with what the Sami call “palsar”, large mounds of peat with a permafrost core. Farther away there is a landscape of dry gravel ridges formed when the ice sheet melted and water carried large quantities of material to the valleys.
